Miami Design District
N.E. 36th St. to N.E. 41st St. between N.E. 2nd Ave. and N. Miami Ave.
Miami, FL
Miami is synonymous with good design, and its visitor-friendly Design District is a rather unprecedented melding of public space and the rather exclusive world of design. Covering a few city blocks, the Design District, at N.E. 2nd Avenue and N.E. 40th Street , has more than 200 showrooms and galleries -- look for the yellow Buick building with the painted cameos of mythological Latin figures on Second Avenue marking the entrance. What's unique is that showrooms here are typically the beat of decorators alone, but the Miami Design District's showrooms are open to the public, occupy windowed street-level buildings, and many double as art galleries or cafés. Visitor-friendly touches, such as an indoor river in Tui Pranich and art exhibits in Holly Hunt, make the once austere world of design less forbidding -- the neighborhood even has its own high school (of art and design, of course) and hosts street parties, like for the Miami Film Festival. Although in most cases you'll need your decorator to secure your purchases, browsers are encouraged to consider for themselves the array of rather exclusive furnishings, decorative objects, antiques, and art.
The Thunderbird Hotel is also close to some of the greatest Miami Beach Restaurants and area attractions!
