Born in 1948 (then off Key Biscayne), the Metro Zoo Miami began with three monkeys, a goat and two black bears, purchased from a stranded road show for $270. Over the years, the facility has grown to receive world-wide recognition for many firsts, including the first birth of an aardvark in captivity, the first Key deer ever taken out of the Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge and in the 1970s, the first hatched southern bald eagle in 50 years.

Some rare and wonderful residents of the Miami Zoo include three Asian elephants born and reared in captivity, white tigers, Indian rhinos and inhabitants natural to several lobes or sections including the Asian, African and Australian lobes – to name a few!

The over 200-acre Miami Zoo facility features a monorail, a children’s petting zoo and many unique and exotic experiences including recent additions like the Andean Condor, the Meerkats, Cuban Crocodiles, Squirrel Monkeys and an indoor traveling zoological exhibit called “Dr. Wilde’s World.”
